Stage 3 - Cubs create Dead Hedge, Bug Hotel and Bird boxes
One pleasant evening in May 2026 we arranged for the Whittlesford & Duxford Cubs to come along and help us. They had a great time and took an interest, as well as running riot.
We built a bug hotel using materials the cubs brought with them, or collected up from around the meadow. A structure of 3 half-pallets had been fixed together beforehand, and Hugh was gratified to encounter a pretty bug before he had even finished!
Next step was constructing a dead hedge. We bashed 8 branches in the ground, weaved long branches around them to hold them together, and filled the centre. The cubs were not that interested in following any sort of plan, but loved throwing things in!
The final task was installing 4 bird boxes they had made previously.
